22 AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) campuses would be established across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, extending premier medical care and medical education beyond the original Delhi campus.

By February 2022, only 6 of the 22 sanctioned AIIMS were fully functional; the other 16 were still incomplete, years behind their original timelines. One case illustrates the gap between announcement and reality: in 2022, government messaging described AIIMS Darbhanga in Bihar as being “opened,” but Alt News found that encroachment-free land had not even been finalised for the site at that point, let alone a building.
