Bullet Train Abhi Bhi “Aa Rahi Hai”?
India's first bullet train, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor, would be completed and running by 15 August 2022, the 75th anniversary of independence.
The foundation stone was laid on 14 September 2017 by PM Modi and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe in Ahmedabad, with 2022 publicly cited as the target. That deadline passed with the corridor incomplete. As of the government's latest timeline, a partial stretch (Surat–Bilimora) is now targeted for 15 August 2027, with the full 508 km corridor slated for end of 2029: a second, later deadline replacing the first. Projected cost has risen from an original ~₹1.08 lakh crore estimate (2016) to roughly ₹1.98 lakh crore.
“Still faster than most Indian trains. Just not faster than the deadline kept outrunning it.”
