5 Trillion Wali Economy Kahan Hai?
“We have to make India a $5 trillion economy... it is not tough, we have to achieve this in the next five years,” Modi said in his Independence Day address at the Red Fort.
The five-year window pointed to 2024. The target was repeatedly restated: Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed a 2024–25 deadline, then Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman pushed it back to 2027–28. Per IMF data, India's GDP was about $3.50 trillion in 2023–24 and $3.76 trillion in 2024–25; FY 2025–26 figures (₹346.4 lakh crore, roughly $3.6 trillion) confirm the original deadline was missed. The IMF itself now estimates the $5 trillion mark around 2026–27, landing between the original and revised government targets.
“Every time someone restates this target, it quietly moves a few years further into the future.”
