Har Ghar Mein Jal Aaya?
“Har Ghar Jal”: a functional tap water connection for every rural household in the country. Promised under the Jal Jeevan Mission, launched on Independence Day.
Coverage rose from 3.23 crore rural households (16.7%) in August 2019 to roughly 15.5 crore of 19.36 crore households (about 80%) by early 2026, a genuinely large expansion. It did not reach “every household” by the 2024 deadline; the mission has been extended to 2028 to cover the remaining, harder-to-reach areas. A 2024 government-commissioned survey adds a further wrinkle: of the households with a tap connection, only about three-quarters actually receive a reliable, safe water supply through it. Coverage also varies sharply by state. Several states report 100%, while West Bengal remains under 60%.
“80% of homes have a tap now. Whether water reliably comes out of it is a separate, quieter conversation.”
