National highway construction reached a record 37 km per day in 2020–21 (13,327 km built that year), reported to the Lok Sabha as proof the pace had roughly tripled since 2014.

The underlying improvement is real: the ministry built roads at roughly 2 km a day before 2014, so even the more recent, calmer pace is a genuine multiple of that. But 37 km/day was also the single best year on record, not a new normal. The pace has since receded: Gadkari's own written reply to the Rajya Sabha put 2023–24 at 34 km/day, and 2024–25 at 29 km/day. Fact-checkers have also flagged that year-over-year “tripling” comparisons built on the 2020–21 peak overstate the trend line by using the best year as the baseline rather than a typical one.
